Daisy explores vertical area for cats

Do you see the bit smile on my face? It’s since I’m in one of my preferred spots, up high. In situation you didn’t already understand it, vertical area is important for cats. For our wild ancestors, a high location enabled us to getaway predators as well as to survey our area from a risk-free vantage point. domestic cats aren’t restricted to keeping four-on-the-floor, we’re agile as well as able to take advantage of many vertical surfaces. If you have a multi-cat household, having great deals of different vertical areas assists us all get along more peacefully even if you online in a little home. When my sibling Harley won’t stop pestering me, I frequently seek out a lofty area to get away from him. include me as well as inspect out some more of the vertical areas I utilize to get away from everything …

Here’s one of my favorite, a multi-level feline tree! Not only is a feline tree fun to climb as well as scratch on, however it provides a fantastic observation spot. I’m an excellent jumper as well as climber, as well as climbing is great exercise. Look, I’m even higher than the photo on the wall!

Even jumping down can be fun if your house is set up with simple gain access to to different levels. luckily my feline tree is close to the window which assists with bird-viewing as well as enables for an simple dismount. comply with me as well as let’s inspect out some more vertical spaces.

This thing is called an arm-war. I have no concept why it is called that since it’s just a cupboard to hold clothes as well as the TV as well as stuff. Anyway, this thing is truly high! sometimes I hide up right here as well as nobody understands where I am. You can’t see it however there’s a cozy blanket up right here too.

I’m so cozy up here, I believe I’ll just hang out for a while.

The last vertical surface I’m going to show you is the trickiest one: this is the bed canopy.  this is narrow like a tightrope, however luckily it’s right over the bed in situation of a fall. I don’t go up there much any type of more, but  Harley likes it.

If your own house doesn’t have many easily-accessible vertical surfaces, do not worry! You can get something like these fine-tuned Feline feline Cloud shelves as well as put them almost anywhere in your home! They are available in different colors as well as in a left- or right-facing style to in shape almost any type of décor.

Leo begs

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore

I hate to admit it, but it’s kind of cute. I’m biased of course because I think most things Leo does is cute. Not only does Leo beg for food he also begs for attention. Neither are subtle. then again, Leo was never good at being subtle.

He’s pretty obvious when he wants the food in your hands. He sits down like the good boy he pretends to be and will patiently wait, hoping something will fall.  I’m usually the one who gives in and will slip him a piece of cheese when Erich isn’t looking. So far Leo likes pretty much anything except carrots. I gave him a carrot once and instead of eating it, he tore it to tiny pieces all over the carpet. It was not fun cleaning that one up.

When Leo is begging for his dinner, he can be pretty sly. He gets fed twice a day; at 7 in the morning and at 7 in the evening. As soon as the clock turns 7, Leo somehow knows and will stand in front of me, pant, and stare deeply into my soul probably screaming the word “food” in his mind. luckily he doesn’t whine, or do anything destructive, he just gives me a “friendly reminder” that it’s time to make food appear in his bowl. It took me a while to figure out what he was doing, but as soon as I did and followed Leo’s instructions, it was his green light to do it whenever he wants food. Oops.

As for attention, Leo just can’t get enough, on his terms. When he wants to play or to be pet, Leo has no problem becoming the lapdog he thinks he is. He does this thing where he jumps next to one of us and will right away turn and put his butt in our face so we can scratch his back. He’s also really good at just being in the way if we’re doing chores during the time at which Leo decides it’s “give Leo attention” time.

When I said Leo just can’t get enough attention on his terms, I meant it. If Leo is being lazy, chewing on his bone, or just tired, he’s only half interested in getting attention. It takes a lot of encouragement to get Leo to come to us sometimes. maybe he’s part cat or was a cat in his past life?

Bather oversights

By Michell Evans
February 28, 2020
“Dear Michell, I groom in my hectic shop five days per week. I am having bather trouble. I can’t discover great bathers. I can’t keep great bathers. My groomers always grumble about the bathers.

Our bathers are needed to bath, dry, reveal anal glands, pull ear hair, deshed, demat, clip pads, clip nails, trim around feet, privates as well as eyes. We pay our bathers minimum wage plus tips, which are quite great at my shop. Do you have any type of advice?” —Travis M.

Hello Travis. Ahhh bathers. This is one of the greatest difficulties for beauty parlor owners, managers as well as groomers. In all reality, bathers are the backbone of the grooming salon. If they are great producers on a consistent basis, they should have to be honored as such. However, if they are not, they may be a lot more difficulty than they are worth.

Consider having bathers do dogs that do not impact the groomers. have them service dogs that only requirement to be seen by a bather. It is commonly the havoc that it wreaks on everybody else’s day when a bather phone calls in ill or gets behind that does the most harm. In this scenario, if a bather no–shows, you can just notify their clients like you would if a groomer no–showed, as well as then it does not wreck everybody else’s routine for the day. These dogs might include short–haired dogs, bath–between–groom dogs, as well as bath–and–tidy dogs. as well as let’s not fail to remember cats. There are lots of cats that a bather can do alone.

Also in this scenario, it can be a lot more helpful to pay compensation instead of hourly. lots of people are a lot more inspired by being paid on compensation as well as will create more. If you choose to pay commission, sit down as well as run some numbers to see what a practical compensation is for your salon. commonly a bather will stick around longer if they are paid much better as well as they feel like they have some manage over exactly how much they make.
Advertisements

If you are in a specify that does not enable you to pay your workers commission, as well as you desire to do so, think about using a base pay that satisfies the minimum hourly wage as well as pay their extra “commission” as a bonus. In this scenario, you are still basing the pay on the individual’s production, so it is similar to commission–based pay. between thirty as well as thirty five percent compensation plus ideas is normally far a lot more than minimum wage, however it depends upon your salon’s prices. Be sure to seek advice from regional employment legislations as well as your CPA for advice.

One of the most difficult elements of running a grooming beauty parlor is managing the schedule. If you have a bather phone call in ill as well as they were arranged to bathe dogs for groomers, who has time to phone call all of those clients as well as reschedule them for one more day and/or figure out exactly how to get a lot of of them done without calling the client? You may discover yourself running triage on the catastrophe days rather than creating high quality grooming yourself.

A receptionist plays a crucial function in a well–functioning salon. They can assist tremendously in these situations. everybody else can continue to create high quality grooming while the receptionist handles the schedule.

Try marketing to the veterinary neighborhood for bathers. a lot of licensed Veterinary Technicians make exceptional bathers as well as they can commonly make much a lot more money as bathers than they can as vet techs. Make sure that your task advertisement describes that they will be utilizing lots of of their tech skills for much better pay. They have spent time as well as money getting their education as well as it is risk-free to state that they would not want it to go to waste.

In the situation of a $60, one–hour bath on a Shepherd with nails as well as deshed, if you pay the bather one third as well as they make a $5 tip, they will make $25 dollars in that hour. According to Zip Recruiter, licensed Veterinary Technicians make $12–$19 per hour. keep in mind that $60 for a Shepherd bath is on the low end of the pricing spectrum.

A beauty parlor must never pay out a lot more than fifty percent of a service. This indicates that the bather as well as the groomer both get their earnings from fifty percent of the service. If you are paying your groomer a fifty percent compensation as well as then paying a bather on top of that, there is bit left over for profit. Your groomers may not like the concept of bathing their own dogs if they have had a bather, however a cost boost might assist them recuperate a few of the lost income.

Don’t underestimate the amount of time it takes to do a high quality bath. commonly the bather will be arranged as well lots of dogs in as well bit time. This is stressful for the bather, groomer as well as dog.

Doodles have taken over much of the routine these days, as well as unless yonull

Catnip Nation: Documentary looks at Unsung Heroes who care for Feral Cats

for every one of our spoiled house cats, whose most significant problem may  be where to find the nearest sun puddle, there’s another cat who has to fend for herself. These feral cats, also knows as community cats, often go unnoticed, and if it wasn’t for dedicated caregivers who feed and care for these cats, often at great personal sacrifice, these cats would be even worse off. Catnip Nation, an hour long documentary, will explore the dichotomy between our beloved pet cats and the cats who live on the streets.

Created by socially-conscious, award-winning journalist, author, and filmmaker Tina Traster, and award-winning writer, editor and producer Lennon Nersesian, this film will take an extensive look at the unsung and often unseen heroes who care for feral cats. You’ll meet Stony point local Andrea LeResche, who climbs into a tangled copse to feed a colony of cats every day, no matter the weather. You’ll be introduced to Ken Salerno, a one-man cat whisperer who makes frequent visits to a new jersey sanctuary, where he has relocated much more than 60 beach cats who would have been rounded up from under the boardwalk in Seaside Heights and taken to shelters, or killed.

The documentary explores how it really “takes a village” to not only care for these cats, but also conquer adversity, which can range from angry neighbors and misguided animal control officers to politicians and developers. You’ll get to know the characters throughout the documentary, and you’ll learn why they do what they do, and how they sustain themselves through such adversity.

The filmmakers are hoping that Catnip nation will change hearts and minds on this essential topic. They are hoping that the documentary will inspire cat lovers to help ignite a grassroots movement demanding a humane service for feline homelessness.

Catnip nation launched a crowdfunding campaign to make this documentary a reality. For much more information about the film, visit CatnipNation.com.

I agree we need to get much more awareness of this issue and the much more who join this cause helping the ferals with TNR the greater the potential. The social media tools now are really the greatest tool for spreading the word. Don’t forget to post on Nextdoor or Craigslist if you need help with a colony or feeding a stray because you never know who might join the cause

I live in a gated community in central California. I have one house cat, however, there are at least seven or eight kitty cats that come to my back yard to eat several times a day. I feed them because I don’t want them to be hungry. Am I doing a wrong thing? What do you recommend? Thanks

You are fantastic to care for them. Feeding promotes breeding, however, so I would suggest contacting a local TNR (trap / neuter / return) group to help get them all fixed. If not, you will have an ever-growing population of cats on your hands. If neighbors begin to complain about the ever-growing number of cats, they are likely to call animal control whose normal protocol is to trap and euthanize. and you sound caring enough that this would bother you greatly. You’re not doing the wrong thing at all, just take it one step even more so the population doesn’t get out of control.

Burnout

By tip Campbell
November 5, 2014

Next to “explosive diarrhea” and “matted doodle,” burnout is one of the most feared phrases in a groomer’s vocabulary. Yet, at some point in their career, all groomers must deal with burnout.

We feel it coming on.  At first, we just feel tired. Then, we notice that the little things start to bother us. We get irritated more easily. Our bodies start to wear down. Suddenly, our job that once brought us so much joy feels like a constant weight upon us. work becomes a dark, shadowy place where we no longer seek sanctuary.  Instead, we feel sad and often just want to run away. We are burned out.

What is burnout?

Burnout is simply when we are too stressed for too long. We have more demands than with which our body and brain can handle. So, our mind starts going into an energy conserving state. We only have the ability to deal with a fraction of what we are normally capable.  Our mind pinpoints the functions and issues it deems most important. And, other things soon fall through the cracks. We start to lose control of our lives. And, we become unbalanced.

So, what do we do when we realize that burnout is upon us?

In order to take back control of our lives, we must restore the rightful balance. We must eliminate those things which have a negative impact on our lives, and we must take care to bring back the positive.

Teach an old dog new tricks

Groomers today have more opportunities than any other generation in the history of the industry. And, we can use these opportunities as a vehicle for change in our lives. here are just a few:

Private Sessions

— many successful, high profile groomers offer one-on-one training sessions. want to find out more? find your favorite groomer on social media sites. It’s often easy to set up these sessions. And, what better way to hone your skills than training with your industry icons?

Small-Group Workshops

— Did you know that you can bring grooming legends into your area and hold a local training session? If traveling to your grooming icon isn’t an option, you can often find like-minded groomers in your area that are interested in learning. many national grooming organizations also hold small group educational sessions and workshops. And, numerous groomer supply companies sponsor small seminars and training opportunities.

Grooming trade Shows

— If you want to hear from a variety of speakers on a wide variety of topics, grooming shows are for you. everyone can learn something new from a trade show. You get to try new products. You meet new people. And, you get to learn new skills and techniques.

Confirmation dog Shows

— contact your local kennel clubs to find shows that you can attend. There is a wealth of knowledge in understanding confirmation, movement, and structure.

Continue your education at home

If traveling or bringing in speakers simply isn’t possible for you, there are still options for groomers who want to learn. social media grooming groups are an excellent way to see how other groomers do things and handle common issues. Now, we have the ability to train wherever we might go. online websites and webinars are easy and economical ways to continue learning. several elite groomers have dvds available to watch whenever and wherever you choose to learn. And, many national breed clubs have online resources for groomers. These resources include detailed grooming charts, pictures, and grooming instructions. So, learning is easier and more accessible than ever.

Change your routine

If you are in a position to do so, give things a good shake up.

Owners or independent contractors might consider changing the hours to a time that fits their lifestyles better.  try different scheduling arrangements. perhaps consider scheduling four long days and have three days off. Or, try working Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, giving you every other day off to recharge.

If you are an employee, talk to your employer about what options you might have to alter your working arrangement.  If there aren’t options for changing your work hours, consider changing the things you can control. As silly as it may sound, sometimes something as small as taking a different route to work or grooming in a different order can make a big change in your workday.

Challenge yourself

Sometimes, we need to regain our drive and our focus we once had. We need to reignite the fire and passion we once had for grooming.

These are just a few ways to challenge ourselves:

Write a small article or advice column for the local paper or a local organization

Create a small newsletter for your clients

Compete in a grooming contest

Certify with a professional grooming organization

Offer to give small demonstrations, such as how to properly brush, to clients and owners.

Do Good

There is no easier way to bring back positivity than by simply doing good deeds. As groomers, we are in a unique position to do good for our communities. simple efforts might be frenull

Cat keeps going back to former home

Hello Mikel, I hope you are able to offer recommendations as I am determined as well as not sure what to do. We online in the North of new Zealand at Omaha Beach.
We have 2 lovely 10 year old sibling domestic longhair cats -‘Mindy as well as Maya’ as well as a medium size labradoodle pet dog called Lily. They all get along very well as well as Maya as well as Lily are particularly close.

About 2 as well as a half years back we offered our house as well as transferred to online in our beach home an hour’s drive additionally north taking our animal household with us. They were extremely familiar with this home as we had been holidaying there with them for 10 years or so. We lived there happily for about 2 years while we tried to discover a a lot more appropriate long-term home.

In November we bought a a lot more appropriate house as well as moved in. The new house is only a short walk away from the holiday home. After keeping the kitties inside with a litter box for two weeks we lastly let them out. Mindy settled in well nevertheless Maya left house after about a week as well as went back to the old place. at first she was simple to discover as well as bring house however she would keep going back. when she disappeared there for a month before we discovered her. We brought her house extremely thin as well as hungry – fed her up as well as she seemed extremely affectionate as well as delighted however she left once again after about 10 days. She has kept going away, often for a few days coming back hungry as well as wanting affection. Last night she returned at 3am after a 12 day absence – very talkative as well as extremely hungry. now she is lounging extremely kicked back on my bed. I have resisted leaving food out for her at the old home as I don’t want to strengthen that behaviour. I always greet her homecoming with a huge feed as well as a clean which she likes then she snuggles in for a huge sleep.

She seems to stay house long sufficient to recharge her batteries then leaves again. I have no concept exactly how to stop her doing this. Is there anything I can do – HELP
Ps. She was neutered at 6 months old. From our observations she does not appear to be sneaking off to one more family. – Helen Penman

Hi Helen,

A few thoughts: presuming you are not ready to shift Maya to inside your home only or to safe your lawn with feline fencing to stop this wandering behavior, why not begin with a GPS collar so you can track where she goes as well as discover her when she does not come home?

Behaviorally, there are a few things you can work on – one is trying to figure out if there is anything in your new place that may be driving her to return to her old, familiar area – can you add enrichment as well as resources inside that would make your new house a lot more interesting to her? Can you make your new lawn a lot more fascinating with foliage, resting places, as well as bird-watching opportunities?

It is possible that she is just extremely connected to her old territory, as well as that patrolling that area is extremely satisfying to her. I would likewise suggest working on a solid recall while you are in your lawn – Sarah Ellis as well as John Bradshaw outline exactly how to do this in their exceptional book, The Trainable Cat. With practice, you can boost the possibilities that she will come back to you when you phone call her.

Cat unexpectedly wishes to get out with screens

Thanks for using help/ advice. We have two cats. Marbles, the feline we are having difficulties with, pertained to online with us (from the streets) 2 1/2 years ago. just recently Marbles began ripping screens apart to get outside. In the time Marbles has been with us, she has never tried to get outside. now she has destroyed two screens from moving doors, she darts for the doors whenever any individual enters or leaves the home as well as is attempting to get with window screens. when outside she begins to chew on grass. Keep Your feline as well as Your Christmas Tree risk-free This holiday season – tips as well as Tricks

A Christmas tree is an inviting tease for any type of inquiring cat. Sparkly baubles are just begging to be batted, tinsel is too-good-not-to chew, as well as with foliage that is dense sufficient to ended up being a appropriate fort, there are many hazards present when fur satisfies fir. right here are some tips to keep kitty from triggering damage unto itself as well as your tree:

To be as risk-free as risk-free can be, go for an unscented, artificial tree with a wide base. If you firmly insist upon the ‘real thing’, think about a Blue Spruce, or a Scotch pine – each has sharp sufficient needles to deter even the most intrepid climber.

With a natural tree, water it to curtail the dropping of needles, as they’re extremely poor for a cat’s insides. prevent plant food, or preservatives, as well as keep in mind that stagnant water contains bacteria – so wrap the trunk with a “tree skirt.”

Pour water into a spritz bottle, add some Citronella oil or Bitter Apple (or Tabasco), as well as mist your tree – it should make it unappealing to your cat.

Place orange or lemon peels around the base twice a week, or, wrap up bundles of cloves in food netting as well as hang them from the lower branches.

Leave the tree undecorated for two days, so kitty gets utilized to it, as well as loses interest.

When dressing the tree, never utilize tinsel or ribbons. If swallowed, they can be fatal.

Hang your costly trinkets near the top of the tree. Hang bells low down, as they ended up being an audible early-warning system. Do not hang edible chocolate ornaments.

For tree lights, the perfect is (a) utilize wires that’ll shut off immediately when chewed, (b) plug tree lights into an extension-cord, (c) tape extension-cord plug into socket, (d) always keep in mind to un-plug lights when you’re not home.

If you don’t believe any type of of this can deter your feline friend, tape the stand to the floor, secure the top of the tree to the ceiling with a fishing wire, as well as let them “have at it.”
