Do Cats and Dogs also requirement to concern about Cholesterol?

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore2

Often I look at my feline and question if he ever gets a headache; does he get migraines similar to people without having the ability to complain? Does “Lazer” ever get worried? get depressed? Does he have other conditions such as hypertension or high cholesterol levels that might over time boost the danger of something bad happening? We recognize that in humans, constant high cholesterol levels might take upwards of twenty or thirty years for the arteries to get clogged. Does it take that long in pets? Is that why nobody concerns about prevention? Is it because we’re just not expecting our four-legged companions to online that long? this week I’m going to briefly go over cholesterol considering that it’s a typical “human” diagnosis that a lot of Americans are familiar with.

High Cholesterol in Cats and Dogs

Hyperlipidemia (increase in blood fats) mainly consists of elevated substances understood as triglycerides and cholesterol. When history is written about this time around period, I believe it’s going to be called the “obsession with fat era.” Each generation seems to requirement something to concern about and considering that in this generation we don’t have somebody like McCarthy to frighten us from communists we discovered another “danger” called cholesterol and fat to focus on.

Obviously comparing the Communist frighten of the 1950s to our concern of dietary fats of today is not truly an apple to apple comparison. Hyperlipidemia in family pets has the prospective to cause vision disorders, pancreatitis, intestinal disorders, and even possible seizures. In humans the listing is even a lot more substantial because of the accompanying cardiovascular dangers involved.

High cholesterol and fats might be triggered by bad diet, by genetic predisposition (such just like miniature Schnauzers which have a genetic predisposition to hyperlipidemia), or by a range of other predisposing conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, liver disease, and hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s Syndrome).

When hyperlipidemia is diagnosed, the very best treatment at first is to preserve a low fat diet. keep the pet’s weight in inspect and get veterinarian recommendations on the very best foods to provide your pet to assist resolve this problem. Supplements consisting of omega-3 fatty acids have also proven to enhance the blood lipid profile and decrease overall cholesterol. In unusual situations when the omega-3 together with a low fat diet plan still isn’t enough, the veterinarian may prescribe some a lot more potent cholesterol reducing medications. These medications have some severe side impacts and are normally not prescribed unless all other choices have been tried very first and failed.

To summarize and to get to a potentially beneficial conclusion, although cholesterol does not seem to be connected with cardiovascular illness in family pets as it performs in humans, it still poses a range of life endangering dangers and must be treated immediately properly.

As always if you have any medication associated concern please phone call one of our 1800PetMeds pharmacists who will be a lot more than delighted to assist you.

Jack the cat has been found!

I just couldn’t wait until our weekly news round up to share this news with you: Jack the cat, who has been missing after escaping his crate in the American Airlines baggage area at JFK airport eight weeks ago, has been found!

“American Airlines is happy to announce that Jack the cat has been found safe and well at JFK airport. American’s team of airport employees have been focused on the search effort since Jack escaped on August 25, 2011. Jack was found in the customs room and was immediately taken by team members to a local veterinarian. The vet has advised that Jack is doing well at present,” a statement on the airline’s Facebook page read.

According to status updates on Jack’s Facebook page,Jack was scanned and the micro chip company (24hour pet watch) was the first to contact owner Karen Pescoe. Jack was found in American Airlines’ customs room, and was taken to an emergency vet in Queens. The vet reported to Karen that Jack is dehydrated and has lost a good amount of weight, though she said that all things considered, he wasn’t in bad shape.

Two of the members of Jack’s “on the ground” team in new York were able to visit Jack at the hospital and report that he looks tired and dirty, but that he’s bright-eyed. In a recent update on Jack’s Facebook page, it is reported that Jack is expected to stay at the hospital for 3-5 days. He has hepatic lipidosis, which can occur when a cat hasn’t eaten for more than a few days. He is on intravenous fluids and is being fed through a nasal tube. There is every reason to believe that Jack will make a full recovery.

According to the statement released by American Airlines, they will fly Jack to California to reunite him with his owner and his brother Barry as soon as Jack is well enough to travel.

Hours after Jack was lost, Karen’s sister started a Facebook page for Jack, which was shared by thousands of people. Jack’s disappearance generated major media attention. just this past weekend, Jack’s friends organized Jack the cat awareness Day with the goal of informing the 37,000 employees at JFK airport that Jack was still missing.

It appears that the awareness campaign has paid off. and according to Bonnie, one of Jacks’ new York friends, they “already got calls this morning for info and interviews about Jack from ABC News, 1010 WINS, NBC News, and MSNBC.”

Jack will surely make headline news again – but this time, for a happy reason. I can’t wait to see that first photo of Jack, reunited with Karen and Barry.

Update: As a result of the search for Jack, other cats were also found around JFK Airport. Unfortunately, the airport has a strict policy of not allowing any cats. These cats are now at a high-kill shelter in new York. If you, or someone you know, can help find these cats a home before their time runs out, please visit Jack’s Facebook page and scroll down, the available cats are listed, along with photos. Catster also listed links to these cats in an update posted earlier today.

I must be in the minority, because I haven’t yet read Tom Cox’s first two books, Under the Paw: Confessions of a cat man and talk to the Tail: Adventures in cat ownership and Beyond, but after reading the just released The Good, The Bad, and the Furry: Life With the World’s most Melancholy Cat, I’m going to have to rectifiy this.

This humorous and heartwarming memoir about a man and his cats offers a thoroughly enjoyable look into the life of a cat guy. Cox shares his home with a group of very diverse felines who keep him on his toes as he adjust to life as a newly single man.

There’s The Bear, a cat who carries the weight of the world on his furry shoulders. The intellectual of the group, The Bear would prefer a life of quiet solitude with plenty of time contemplate the ways of the world. much to his chagrin, he is surrounded by cats (and, in his opinion, humans) of a significantly lower IQ.

There is Janet, who is actually a male. There is Ralph, a tabby who enjoys meowing his own name at top volume, and there is Shipley, Ralph’s brother, who likes to steal food.

Funny and poignant, this book will make you smile and tug at your heart strings, often at the same time. and you will probably recognize some of the cats who share or have shared your life in the antics of Cox’s cats.

By Lynn Paolillo, CFMG, CFCG

The grooming market has been under scrutiny lately with several news stories featuring injuries as well as deaths of animals in grooming salons. Cats are especially sensitive to the stress, loud noises, as well as the unfamiliar atmosphere of a grooming appointment. It is essential for groomers to acknowledge modifications in the cat’s habits as well as health and wellness in purchase to avoid serious injury or death. But, what ought to groomers look for? The very first time a feline gos to a expert groomer can be stressful, so it is essential that the groomer focus on making this go to a positive experience. likewise keep in mind that the cat’s owner does not always understand to share medical conditions as well as history that may impact the groom. during the preliminary conversation with the owner, ask particular concerns concerning heart or breathing problems, history of seizures, medications, previous injuries, etc. have a listing of concerns that cover previous medical, behavior, as well as grooming history to talk about with clients, as well as ask even more concerns if any type of “red flags” pop up. any type of habits or mannerisms that are out of the regular ought to be discussed with the owner as well as included in the grooming notes.

While grooming, take additional time to introduce each element of the groom slowly so as not to startle or frighten the cat. Variable speed dryers set on low, wrapping the feline snugly in a big towel, as well as testing clippers on a little area are all methods to assist introduce the feline to the grooming process, similar to exactly how a new puppy would be. The goal does not have to be a ideal haircut, however to introduce the different steps of the groom as well as to establish a trusting connection with the groomer.

Unfortunately, not all very first time feline clients are kittens. numerous will are available in already in horrible groom condition. Another group of cats that requirement additional precaution during the groom are aggressive cats. Cats who are hissing, growling, swatting, as well as actively trying to bite, all autumn into this category. numerous of these cats respond well to a snug hold to avoid them from flailing. The cat’s deal with as well as breathing patterns ought to be continuously monitored. loops as well as harnesses ought to never be put around a cat’s neck or utilized to prolong the cat’s legs. always change dealing with methods based on the cat’s reactions to prevent triggering any type of pain or discomfort.

There are some cats who respond to restraint by thrashing as well as combating even harder. Cats who respond this method ought to be sent to a veterinarian to proceed.
