Hunting season can be a pretty dangerous time for pets, but that doesn’t mean you have to stay indoors the whole time.

If you live out in the country like I do you’ll want to take some extra precautions when taking your dog out this fall. You can still go out and enjoy the great outdoors with your dog during hunting season by following a few simple safety tips.

Pets should Not Be Left Unattended Outdoors during hunting Season

The most important safety tip to keep your dog safe is to keep an eye on them at all times. keep them leashed, and don’t leave them unattended outdoors during hunting season.

Dog’s need daily exercise, and for a lot of us that includes outdoor walks. You can still go out and have fun with your dog during hunting season, just make sure you stay with your dog and don’t leave them unattended.

The dogs most at risk are those that accompany hunters, but you should still take extra precautions when going outdoors with your dog. even though hunters are encouraged to recognize their target shooting accidents can happen.

Find Out When Your local hunting seasons begin & End

These vary by state; check with your states hunting or wildlife agency to find out when the season officially begins. If you live in the united states check out this list of Fish & wildlife services to find out when each hunting season begins in your state.

Avoid Going Out in the woods On opening Day/Weekend

In many states opening day for certain hunting seasons is treated as a holiday. You’ll want to avoid being out in the woods on popular hunting days since you’ll encounter more hunters than usual during the opening of a popular hunting season.

Find Out Where hunting is Permitted

Some public parks don’t allow hunting; it depends on your state’s regulations. There’s a few metro parks in my area that don’t allow hunting but the state parks do. These rules can change depending on current deer populations. check with your local wildlife service to find out what lands near you allow hunting.

Keep Your dog on Leash during hunting Season

If you’re going to be walking out in any rural areas it’s best to keep your dog on leash. If you live near any public land that can be used for hunting the last thing you want is your dog wandering off or chasing after a deer.

Discourage Your dog From Chasing Wildlife

During hunting season you don’t want your dog talking off after game. If your dog has a tendency to chase or doesn’t have a reliable recall don’t allow them off leash during hunting season.

Get Your dog a bright Orange Vest

One of the ways you and your dog can stay safe during hunting season is by making sure you stand out. If you’re going to be out in the woods it’s a good idea to wear bright orange clothing to really stand out.

Hunters must wear ‘hunter orange’ by law in Michigan, and many other states have similar statues. It’s one of the easiest ways to make sure you stand out and stay safe during hunting season.

They sell “hunter orange” vests & clothing for dogs, but if your dog isn’t comfortable in a vest you could use a bandana. The orange is meant to be easily visible in all but the thickest of woods.

If your dog doesn’t like to wear vests you can opt for a bright bandana or collar.

When in the woods You should wear bright colors as Well

Wear clothing that will stand out in the woods. avoid neutrals or earth tones, and make sure you and your dog are easily visible. The last thing you want is to blend in with your surroundings during hunting season.

Be prepared for Declining Daylight

If you’re going to be walking your dog in the woods remember that there’s going to be less daylight hours.

Consider some reflective clothing if you’re going to be outdoors in the early morning or evening. For dogs there’s a wide variety of reflective collars and leashes available. carry a flashlight if you’re going to be out after dark.

Attach a Bell to Your Dogs Collar

The bell will make it easier for you and others to keep track of your dog. If you don’t want to use a bell don’t be afraid to make some noise – making yourself known to hunters.

If You spot a hunter Make yourself Known

Don’t assume that the hunter sees you first. The safest thing to do when you spot a hunter is make sure you get their attention rather than trying to sneak around.

For Walks choose a Park Where hunting is not Permitted

Laika and I still like to get in some good, long hikes in the fall. We found a nice park 4 miles away that doesn’t permit hunting so we can still get in some long hikes.

Be aware That Dogs Can Be Spooked by Gunfire

Dogs that aren’t trained to hunt may very well be scared of gun shots. keep them on a leash to prevent them from running off.

Avoid walking on trails in the early morning or Late Enull

“Mange Or No Mange, Danielle Still likes Me”

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore12

Around the time my child turned 2 all we kept hearing from her for a two week period was “dog,” “Ick,” “dog,” “Ick.” It would seem to any individual listening that she desired a pet dog however that’s not what she was stating at all; Danielle was trying to tell any individual who would listen that her pet dog DeeDee was sick. The reason Danielle was able to spot that DeeDee had an health problem without a stethoscope or a medical examination was because, unfortunately, DeeDee’s health problem was very visible as well as not quite to look at.

DeeDee had a condition understood as Demodectic Mange as well as her infestation was especially severe. From the time DeeDee got sick up up until the time she was totally sign complimentary was an very tough time for the whole family. whenever DeeDee would be identified by any type of of the neighbors or guests that came over I had to response a series of concerns as well as describe that her specific condition, although unsightly, was not communicable to humans.

One night we had a buddy over for holiday dinner who was a regional medical physician as well as he kept eyeing DeeDee from across the room. rather than waiting on the concern I made a decision to beat him to it as well as stated “No concerns this specific type of mange is not communicable to humans” to which he responded “Oh I was just going to ask you what was wrong with your pet dog as well as I believe you may want to keep her away from people as well as especially children, just in case.” rather than additionally the discussion about mange during the holidays, I made a decision to just modification the topic with the very best 2 words reserved for such events “Let’s Eat.”

Demodex or Demodectic mange is a condition triggered by a mite that impacts the skin as well as coat of animals. Although lots of animals bring this mite, a lot of do not show symptoms of infection unless their immune system is weakened for one reason or another. When the mite colony is little the pet normally appears extremely healthy; when the number of mites accumulate, symptoms begin to be seen. a few of the breeds which are a lot more prone to establishing Demodex are Boxers (which was DeeDee’s breed), American Staffordshire Terriers, English Bull Dogs, Boston Terriers, afghan Hounds, Beagles, Chihuahuas, Chow Chows, Collies, Dachshunds, Dalmatians, Doberman Pinschers, German Shepherds, fantastic Danes, Sheep Dogs, Pugs, as well as Pointers. Although infection in cats is not as common, Siamese as well as Burmese have shown a bit a lot more susceptibility.

Some of the very first indications of infestation are hair loss around the muzzle as well as eyes, as well as itching may or may not be present. Lesions are present as well as may include the whole body of the pet. Those lesions can ended up being red as well as crusty. If you suspect infection the very best method to appropriately make a diagnosis is by bringing the pet to the veterinarian for an exam. The veterinarian may have to take a skin scraping as well as take a look at it under magnification. lots of illnesses can contribute to the pet ending up being prone to Demodex, so a full veterinary workup is absolutely a great concept to make sure you are treating the right method with the right medication. If the underlying condition does not get resolved then the Demodex becomes a lot more tough if not impossible to treat.

There are lots of treatments offered for mange as well as your veterinarian may select that which is finest fit for your pet. Mitaban (amitraz) is a medication that is used to the skin as well as is authorized for the treatment of demodecosis. Ivermectin is an oral or injected medication that is often used.

A few of the side-effects of these treatments include seizures, vomiting, as well as loss of appetite. Collies as well as shelties may be a lot more prone to establish toxic reactions to a few of these medications such as ivermectin because of the MDR1 gene discussed in my previous publish entitled “MDR1- A normally risk-free medication might turn Deadly.” one more thing that may be suggested is improving the pet’s diet, including a multivitamin such as incredibly VitaChews, as well as a potent fish oil supplement such as incredibly Pure Omega 3.

Demodex mange is a condition that is extremely disruptive as well as unsightly however thankfully one that is normally completely treatable with appropriate veterinary care. the most crucial step taken towards getting the pet much better as well as keeping the pet well is making as well as preserving a great connection with a trusted veterinarian who gets to understand you as well as understand your specific pet. A 1800PetMeds pharmacist is likewise offered to response any type of medication associated concerns that you may have.

Cat Camp NYC: celebrating All things cat

The inaugural cat Camp NYC, a weekend that was all about celebrating cats and the many ways they enrich our lives, was a substantial success. From educational lectures to informal roundtable discussions covering topics ranging from how to save orphaned kittens, help feral cats, design a home to provide an enriched environment for cats that is also pleasing to the human eye, to a keynote address by none other than Jackson Galaxy, the event drew thousands of cat lovers. In addition to the educational offerings, there were lots of vendors offering their cat-themed products.

This was an event after my own heart, because it focused on how to make cats’ lives better, whether it’s the lives of the feral cats hiding in new York City’s alleyways or the lives of our own spoiled house cats. everyone who was there came because they loved cats – all cats.

I hosted an hour long “Ask the cat expert Q&A” session on Saturday, and I probably could have kept going for hours. thank you to all who attended my session, and for the terrific questions you asked.

with Kitten lady Hannah Shaw
Kitten lady Hannah Shaw delivered an inspirational seminar on how to help orphaned kittens that not only focused on the “how to” of feeding, cleaning and socializing, but also addressed the emotional aspects of fostering kittens, including the challenges of compassion fatigue.

Three of my favorite cat people: Dr. Jane Brunt, Kate Benjamin and Jackson Galaxy
Kate Benjamin‘s lecture on feline design and how to create a living space that meets cats’ needs but is also pleasing to the human eye offered wonderful ideas ranging from simple and economical solutions to showing us photos of incredible furniture and living designs that may not be budget-friendly to the average cat guardian, but still offer inspiration for what’s possible.

Robin Olson of Kitten Associates hosted an informal roundtable discussion where she and some of the attendees shared heartwarming rescue stories.

In between sessions, there was an entire floor of cat-themed vendors to browse through, offering cat paintings, notecards, cat beds, accessories, cat furniture, and more.

The event ended with Jackson Galaxy’s keynote address. even though I’ve known Jackson for many years, this was the first time I heard him speak, and I was blown away. He is not only thoroughly entertaining, but his genuine compassion for cats and his passion for making their lives better is nothing short of inspirational. He believes that every life matters, and that we all can do something to save more cats. I can’t think of a more purrfect message to close out this wonderful event.

I get up 2 hours later as well as the TV is still on. If thy can press the right button on the remote, even though it’s so tiny, it would save so much $$!

Get Your pet dog To Behave: show Some Lovin’

say it ain’t so, Cooper. What’s that? Shelters are loaded with dogs abandoned by pet owners. That’s not right, is it? No, Cooper, you are correct. too lots of dogs find their way to shelters simply because their pet owners failed to offer a lot of love and understanding.

Behavior ranks as the No. 1 reason that pet owners give up on their pooches. Couldn’t take another split up couch. another pair of shoes destroyed. Garbage litters the floor whenever the pet dog is left alone. Not enough time in the day to spend with that precious puppy.

Stop, ideal there. You can rest assured that this doesn’t need to happen if you just take the time to embrace your pet dog and yes show the ideal love to keep Cooper and you happy, healthy and life-long companions.

Embrace Doggyness: look at the world from your dog’s viewpoint, says Debra Horwitz, DVM, DACVB, one of the nation’s leading veterinary behaviorists and lead editor of Decoding Your Dog. “It’s crucial to understand that your pet dog looks at the world like a dog,” she says. “While they do interact with people, they want to do pet dog stuff. embrace their doggyness.” After all, some dogs like to sniff, others like to jump. It’s part of being a dog.

show Some Smarts: You come home to a kitchen floor full of garbage strewn about the floor. Now, who left the delicious smelling trash helpful for that hungry dog. simply make sure you either cover it well or hide it. “Make sure food isn’t accessible. instead of denying it be smarter,” Dr. Horwitz says. Ditto for those new shoes and more.

Time – and Timing – to Eat: find a routine for chow time. Dogs get hungry but can’t control access to their meal; you do. Dr. Horwitz suggests a small meal in the morning and a larger one at night. and by all means, take them out after feeding to relieve themselves. “This not only shows your love but it supports good behavior.”

Let’s Explore: Dogs love stimulation and interesting new environments. The backyard may be great for a quick potty break but it’s also boring. The backyard looks the same, smells the same. Taking the pet dog on a quick (5-10 minute) walk before work changes the scenery. “You give your pet dog something interesting and stimulating,” Dr. Horwitz explains.

Work Out: There’s no better way to build a bond and enhance your and your dog’s physical well being than some exercise. A good walk stimulates their mind and helps when you leave for the day. in contrast to popular belief, dogs don’t run around the house while you’re away so that exercise helps prepare them for the day without you, too.

Play Time: call it enrichment. show your love by playing games and doing some training. Whether it’s fetching a stick or newspaper or finding a hidden toy, you supply enrichment for your dog. start by making it easy – throw the stick a couple feet or hide the toy under a chair. then reward your pet dog with a treat for success. Repeat as you make the game or training a lot more difficult. explore food dispensing toys to mix it up a bit.

Time Management: who isn’t busy these days but it doesn’t have to be hours on end to supply the much-needed enrichment, Dr. Horwitz says. You simply find time that fits your schedule. You may enjoy an hour-long show so it’s best to play some games during the commercials. maybe you can only take a 10-minute walk on workdays but you can plan longer walks on the weekend. break it down so it’s manageable.

Communicate: Dogs are smart but they need to know what you want. basic words can be used to train them and create that bond. For example, “Come over for some lovin’.” Eventually, your pet dog understands that it’s time for that embrace. “Dogs learn so lots of things through having some control and predictability,” Dr. Horwitz notes. and it extends well beyond “fetch, time for bed, choose a walk.”

Mixed Messages: You may not even realize it but maybe you send the wrong message. Take separation anxiety when your pup goes crazy when you leave for work. Well, do you just leave. Instead, spend some time to ease into it. play with a toy, get some of that lovin’ or hide that favorite treat. If your pet dog barks when it goes outside, maybe it’s because he or she learned that barking opens the door to use the outdoor facilities. “We tend to control movement but we also can use it to control expectations. You set the stage,” Dr. Horwitz notes.

Start Early; stay the Course: By all means, love and show your pet dog from the start. Dogs simply need consistency. For example, if Cooper was always allowed to jump on the couch, don’t expect him to stay off that brand-new couch. That’s confusing considering that Cooper only knows that the couch is comfy. always start as you plan to go on, Dr. Horwitz stresses. You can show an old pet dog new tricks. However, remember to stop an ongoing behavior, you need to show your pet dog something new to replace it.

Know Your Dog: Your pet dog is a family member. Theyeventually tell you what they prefer. They may take pleasure in rubbing their ears, petting their tummy, brushing their fur. then by all indicates embrace it. They may not like children or strangers. Don’t force your pet dog to sit while some innocent child tries to pet it. If strangers set your pet dog off, find a safe spot when company comes over. equally important, when you tell your pet dog what to do, your pet dog must have the opportunity to decide. “No. I’m sleeping. Leave me alone.” Or maybe it just doesn’t want to play. If your pet dog isn’t comfortable doing something, let it go unless it’s essential, Dr. Horwitz cautions.

Avoid Punishment: research shows that punishment and extreme procedures simply aren’t the answer. Physical punishment, especially after the fact, doesn’t indicate they know they did something wrong rather that you are upset. and please say no to choke collars and shock collars, Dr. Horwitz pleads. “Just as we’ve learned that it’s not ideal to physically punish a child, you must never punish your dog.”

Healthy and Happy: Please don’t neglect your dog’s physical well-being, Dr. Horwitz adds. good care from a veterinarian indicates everything to make sure your pet dog remains safe, healthy and happy.

In the end, it takes time, commitment and compassion. When you embrace your dog’s doggyness, you show the love and build a bond that enriches you and your dog’s lifelong friendship. and Cooper will thank you for finding a forever home rather than a shelter.

Debra Horwitz, DVM, DACVB spreads the lovin’ as editor and author in Blackwell’s Five-Minute Veterinary seek advice from scientific Companion: Canine and Feline Behavior, second Edition. released in January 2018, the updated book uses a detailed guide to diagnosing and managing behavior problems in dogs and cats.
