Dental care is as important for pets as it is for people. In fact, it’s estimated that almost 90% of all adult cats and dogs suffer from periodontal disease to some extent. brushing your pet’s teeth may be difficult to add to your list of daily chores, but keeping his or her teeth and gums healthy is vital for a long, healthy life. Make caring for your pet’s teeth easier with VetriScience Perio Support, an easy-to-use dental cleaning powder for cats and dogs that helps reduce plaque and promote healthier teeth and gums.

What are the signs of dental disease in dogs and cats?

Often pets may show no symptoms when suffering from dental disease until serious complications develop. Oral infections can lead to systemic disease and become detrimental to your pet’s overall health. Some signs of dental disease in dogs and cats include the following:

Bad breath – While it’s true that bad pet breath can come from a variety of sources, continuous mouth odor can be a symptom of decaying teeth, plaque buildup, and periodontal disease.

Puffy, red and/or bleeding gums – Gum disease (also known as gingivitis) can result in inflammation, redness, and bleeding. There can also be separation of the gumline from the teeth, which can become infected and painful.

Increased drooling – excessive salivation is a key indicator of oral disease, but can also indicate other health problems such as heatstroke, contact with poisonous plants, anxiety, or upper respiratory infection.

Yellow or brown spots on teeth near the gumline – Plaque and tartar buildup can become visible as discoloration of the teeth, leading to tooth decay that may require professional dental cleaning, drilling and filling, or even tooth extraction.

Difficulty eating – When teeth or gums become infected, uncomfortable abscesses may result. If your pet has oral pain, he or she may refuse to eat, which can result in weight loss and malnourishment.

If your pet displays any of the above symptoms, consult with your veterinarian. A veterinary dental examination may be required for further evaluation.

How to prevent dental disease in pets

Daily brushing of teeth and gums is widely recommended by veterinarians as the #1 way to prevent dental disease in dogs and cats. There are now specially designed pet toothbrushes made to fit your pet’s mouth perfectly, as well as pet toothpaste in flavors cats and dogs love. These help make brushing your pet’s teeth easier. Toothpaste for humans is not safe for pets, so be sure to use only toothpaste that is formulated specifically for cats and dogs.

Brushing your pet’s teeth each day may not be easy to fit into your busy schedule. Luckily, there are more products than ever to help remove plaque and tartar from your pet’s teeth between brushings. These options are optimal for those pet parents who are only able to brush their pets’ teeth a few times per week.

Dental treats and chews are a popular way to give pets a tasty snack that has the added benefit of promoting oral hygiene and fresher breath. Your pet’s natural chewing action helps scrub plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums, while special ingredients help safely reduce bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum disease, and bad breath.

Another easy way to help keep your pet’s teeth clean and breath fresh is by using a dental rinse or water additive to kill bacteria that cause plaque and tartar. Water additives like Be Fresh dental care solution can easily be mixed with your pet’s daily water to whiten teeth, freshen breath and kill harmful bacteria that can cause dental disease.

Develop your own comprehensive pet dental care program to include regular brushing along with a combination of other dental care products, as well as veterinary dental check outs once or twice yearly to help protect your dog or cat against dental disease.

Keep the automobile and the TV, I just want Rover and Bella’s Teeth clean

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore1

She called me crying and saying things that I was not able to quite understand at first. My cousin Jodi and I have always had a very close relationship. We went to the same schools and our families took summer holidays together. I was one year older than her and whenever she had any kind of trouble she would call and speak to me. This phone call was not the normal “my automobile won’t start” or “I need help with math” phone call. Jodi proceeded to tell me that she is about to walk out on a fifteen year marriage. She apparently felt that living with someone who completely ignored her wants and needs was the same as abuse. considering that I didn’t know enough about this kind of thing and her spouse is a pal of mine, I kept quiet and did what I believe is the best thing to do under the scenario and remained quiet and listened. just before she hung up she started reading to me a list of things that wouldn’t get done around the house if she just walked out. among lots of things she was providing the most interesting one I felt was her worry that her dogs would miss their regular teeth cleanings. even to me, someone who understands the value of good pet dog oral hygiene, I still could not understand her worry with canine gingivitis at a time like this.

Gingivitis is caused by plaque build up over time on the dog’s teeth. When the pet dog gets a little older normally by four or five, this problem becomes a lot more evident. Gingivitis presents as inflammation and redness and it’s normally the result of poor dental hygiene. lots of owners feel that their dog’s teeth don’t need anything and will somehow stay clear and disease complimentary all by themselves. I asked my dog’s veterinarian about what percentage of dogs she felt had gingivitis; she confirmed that it was a lot more than half and possibly up to seventy five percent. This is undoubtedly not an official statistical study but it does point to a potentially common condition that typically leads to discomfort, loss of teeth, broken jaws, and in some severe cases may even cause a general infection that requires strong antibiotics.

The best way to stop canine gingivitis is proper dental hygiene, good diet, and an owner who is committed to the task of keeping their family pets healthy. Rawhide bones and Greenies are very popular choices because dogs normally love chewing them and eating them. other ways to keep gingivitis from occurring is to frequently brush the teeth and to add a product called Be Fresh dental care option to the pet’s drinking water. Chlorine Dioxide, the ingredient found in Be Fresh kills bacteria that leads to tooth and gum disease and it also prevents bacteria from growing on the inside of the water dish.

If you notice an odor from your dog’s mouth, the gums looking inflamed, or there may be swelling and refusal to eat, a trip to the veterinarian would be a very good idea that can save you much trouble later. The veterinarian can remove the build up of tartar, fix teeth that have been broken, and treat any infections or abscesses. The animal might be placed on antibiotics and even on anti-inflammatory medication or pain medication to help the gums and teeth heal if surgery was required. After the teeth are cleaned up and fixed at the veterinarian’s office the owner now need to continue being committed to keep the animal’s dental health one of the priorities in buy to stop recurrence.

If you have any questions about your pet’s medications, don’t guess at the answer. A 1800PetMeds pharmacist is a good resource for information and would be delighted to help answer any of your questions.

Today Jodi and Mike are no longer married but somehow remain pals with each other and I remain pals with both of them. They both sound very delighted and claim to be. I told them I would write a little about my experience with them and they actually laughed and welcomed the idea. often I mean two very great people with the best of intentions can find it very tough to live together. considering that I don’t know much about the secrets of a good relationship when Jodi started talking about what was wrong or ideal in her marriage I jokingly asked about her dog’s dental health. Jodi pulled out her cell phone cam and took a photograph and told me to look at how sparkling the teeth of both of her dogs were, and at how they liked showing off their smile for the camera.

Retained baby Teeth in pets

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore1

Like people, dogs have two sets of teeth: what are known as deciduous or baby teeth which puppies are both with, and the permanent adult teeth.  By 6 months of age, it is typical that all of the baby teeth have fallen out, and have been replaced by the permanent or adult teeth.

In certain breeds such as toy breeds like Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles, one or a lot more of the deciduous teeth may be retained into adulthood, leading the presence of a double row of teeth, most commonly of the canine teeth, but also possibly of the thinner and sharper incisor teeth.  In some cases, the roots of the permanent teeth may be affected and pushed out by the retained baby teeth.  the best thing to do if the retained baby teeth do not fall out is to have them removed at the time of neuter or spay over 6 months of age.  in that way, improper tooth and root alignment is avoided.

How long Can You Leave Your cat Alone?

a lot of cat parents get stressed at the thought of having to leave their cat, even if it’s only for a couple of days. and while you might be tempted to leave your cat for a weekend and just leave enough food and water for her, this is simply not a good idea.

Dr. Mikel Delgado, a feline behaviorist, owner of Feline Minds, and a post-doctoral fellow at the school of Veterinary medicine at UC Davis, recommends not leaving your cat alone without someone pertaining to check on her for a lot more than 24 hours. ““Cats may overeat due to stress, knock over their water dish, or get injured — so it’s not fine to just leave them with a big bowl of food and keep your fingers crossed,” Delgado told Inverse.

For a lot more information, please read how long can I leave my cat alone on Inverse.

I went away for the weekend for a wedding, leaving my spouse to care for my cats. He wasn’t one to do a head count at mealtimes or bedtime. When I came home, one of my cats was not around. I found her down on the cold basement floor, her head pinned under the leg of the folded ironing board. No idea why she went down there poking around, but there you are. She was in shock when I got her to the vet and her heart stopped and she was gone.

I don’t have any family and have no pals who could help me out with petsitting. I’ve had several very bad experiences with petsitters when I traveled which includes at least one who stole from me and resented my asking her for a text update after visits. Last March I had an injury and to be in the healthcare facility for a week so I called my vet for a recommendation and got the most terrific petsitter I’ve ever had. They installed a lock box on the side of my house so if I have to be gone unexpectedly, I can call them. and they did a terrific job and texted me with updates and pictures after every check out without my asking. I also have cameras so when I have to be gone I can check up on my cats and I even do that when I’m out for a couple of hours. It gives me peace of mind considering that they are a lot more crucial to me then anything else in the world.

When I was in the healthcare facility for 6 days, and my brother came in from Chicago, I still had a cat sitter come 2x day to take care of my little girl to give her meds and clean the litter box and feed her. My brother is a pet dog person and I would not depend on him to take care of my little girl.

I was fortunate to find a very good cat sitter who I paid to come twice a day, but I still stressed when I had to leave them. no one can take care of your babies like you can! also best to have at least 2 kitties so they always have company.

No matter what… would not leave the kids home alone. Cats can fill a potty box fast. then leave for a weekend! NO! Cats need their parents! If like to go places, take them along, get a reputable caretaker for daily home visits. Or don’t get fur kids!

I would never leave my cats alone. I haven’t been on holiday in years I won’t leave them in a kennel or a stranger too take care of them. Something you could happen and I would feel guilty if it does and I don’t depend on any individual with them.

I hate thinking about leaving my cats alone. I don’t even like to leave the house for long and leave them alone. They are all so attached to us. I don’t like disrupting their routines.

I just could not leave my cat alone for a lot more than 8 hours. even that seems far too long especially now after spending so much time together during the lockdown. I try to take her with me when I travel but when I can’t I have a trusted pal who pertains to feed her. I know at some point I will need to hire a cat sitter to come once a day while I am gone. Her litter needs to be cleaned, her water needs to be changed and she needs a little attention too!

All animals Welcome…And Loved!

Publisher’s Note: This column is the second in a series “countdown” highlighting the ten 10th anniversary Goodnewsforpets.com iPad™ contest winners, a bit of the “story behind the story as each story was different. champion Tanja Berkhouse has a online menagerie of animals as well as volunteers at the Pennsylvania Humane Society. Don’t fail to remember to inspect out the Pennsylvania Humane society website, the group Berkhouse naturally selected to get her $500 matching donation to assist other regional pets.

I am always searching for sites that have animal associated information. I checked out about the contest from your site as well as the most attractive to me was winning $500 for a shelter plus having an iPad. I’ve already uploaded my photos from my household including my pets.

I’d like to let Goodnewsforpets.com visitors understand exactly how pleased I am to assist the Pennsylvania Humane society with the donation. The iPad is a benefit of course, however to share a story as well as show my animals in photos is priceless to me!

We are a multi pet household. I spend a great deal of time with my animals as well as I believe that’s why they all get along. My other half as well as youngsters assist me. My animals get along, however I do have my Chinchillas in a cage to keep them risk-free — ,just in case.

Our canine Kerstin with Our feline untidy Marvin

I have one German Shepherd (my very first own dog). Her name is Kerstin(named after my finest good friend in Germany). She will be 6 years old in April as well as we have had her because she was 8 weeks old.

We have three cats. Crosby (named after Sidney Crosby) was embraced in 2007 when he was a small kitten. The next feline we embraced was in December, 2008. Her name is Marcia as well as she is extremely loving.

Then came untidy Marvin. We phone call him untidy Marvin since he is an all white feline as well as always gets dirty, or he gets into our trash — a common alley cat. untidy Marvin is 8 months old as well as gangs up with my canine Kerstin all the time. My cats are all indoor cats to guarantee their health and wellness as well as safety.

I purchased two Chinchillas from a woman who didn’t want them anymore. To my surprise the female had a infant a few weeks later, so two chinchillas ended up being three! My female chinchilla’s name is Juliet, the Dad’s name is Mc Lovin(he is extremely tame) as well as the infant was named Oops, because we had no concept he was going to part of the Berkhouse family!

I always would suggest adopting a pet, the unwanted, abused animals will make the very best pets, since they understand they will get a second possibility as well as will be the very best animals ever. All the adopter needs to do is spend great deals of time as well as provide numerous hugs as well as kisses!

As with people, animals may suffer from motion sickness when riding in cars and trucks or trucks.  While this phenomenon is fairly common, it is not remove why some animals are a lot more predisposed to this than others.

Symptoms of motion sickness may include restlessness, panting, drooling and even vomiting.  Some animals may get so upset that they will learn to vomit on anticipation of even entering a automobile at rest.   other animals will develop motion sickness at various points on a long trip.  treatment of motion sickness normally includes medications such as Benadryl or Dramamine.  A newer veterinary drug known as Cerenia may also be successfully used for motion sickness in pets. Celebrate Mutt’s Day in July with Your Mixed Breed

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore4

Sometimes mutts get a bad rap. Sure, they may not have distinguished marks and the perfect genes like purebreds, but the combination of traits a mutt has can be quite astonishing. When you mix dog breeds,  a non-purebred pooch can turn out to be a valuable hunter, guard dog, or herder, or all three! Plus, it’s really not that hard to train any dog,  mutt or otherwise,  some simple obedience commands.  So why not give mutts the attention they deserve!

July 31st marks Mutt’s Day; a day dedicated to the greatness of mutts and all the wonderful attributes they have. even though mutts are great, for personality purposes, it is important to know a little something about your mutt’s background. If you are a mutt owner, you want your dog to be happy in his or her surroundings. However, it’s also important to make sure your personalities match. So how can you determine what traits your mutt may have?

Interestingly enough, the AKC has determined that many mixed breeds have the same 10 purebred genes in them. The list includes: Labrador Retriever (#1 most popular breed), German Shepherd, Chow Chow, Boxer, Rottweiler, Poodle, American Staffordshire Terrier, golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, and Siberian Husky. all of these dogs are great companions, and yet they all have different traits. Of course now there is a DNA test you can give your pet that many pet owners find helpful. Also, if you adopted your pet, sometimes the staff at the shelter can give you some insight as to what your dog may be. even a vet could tell you something about your dog’s breed.

Lastly, research shows that the so-called mutt makes up  about 58% of all the dogs in the U.S. That’s a lot of mutts! With mutts having that high of a percentage in the “dog world”, are pet owners looking past pure breed dogs and going toward mixed breeds? maybe – because any pet owner can see that it doesn’t take the perfect genes to be a loyal friend.

If you have the perfect mixed breed pet, help celebrate Mutt’s Day on July 31st by giving your mutt some extra special love and maybe even a new toy or treat!

Book Review: Catsong by T.J. Banks

Catsong is a captivating and delightful collection of stories about special cats and the impact they had on the author’s life.  T.J. Banks shares the stories of the cats that have graced her life, and the immense love, happiness and comfort they have brought, each in his or her own individual and special way.  There is Alexander Czar-Cat, the magical cat of the author’s childhood.  There is Jason, a black-and-white stray whose love and affection accompany Banks through her college years and into her marriage.  There are Cricket and Tikvah, and Solstice and Kilah, cats that connect with the author on a soul level.  T.J. Banks clearly knows and understands cats, and her appreciation of and love for each individual cat shines through in her sensitive and beautiful prose.  By sharing her stories about these cats, the author makes us feel that we actually knew them, and she also shows us how genuinely special all the feline spirits that come and go from our lives are.  For those of us ready to listen with our hearts, cats have so much to show us.  They enrich our lives through their simple, loving presence, bring us happiness and entertainment with their limitless antics, and supply quiet love and support during our dark days.  This collection of stories covers all of these aspects, and more.

It’s impossible to pick one story over another – they’re all terrific and special in their own way.  but for me, the title story, Catsong, touched me  a lot of deeply.  This is the story of Kilah, the seventeen-year-old tortoiseshell cat who helps her human through personal catastrophe and many animal crises – and whose loving spirit continues to bring comfort even after passing into the non-physical dimension.

This book is a treasure for any cat lover and makes a terrific holiday gift.   The author has a limited number of autographed copies available for sale.   E-mail T.J. Banks at dawntreader27@earthlink.net for a lot more information and to order.

T.J. Banks is the author of Souleiado and Houdini, a novel for young adults that Cleveland Amory has enthusiastically branded a “winner.”  Her work has appeared in numberous anthologies, including chicken Soup for the single Parent’s soul and A cup of comfort for women in Love.  She lives with her daughter Marissa and their cats and rabbits in a often peaceable, but always interesting kingdom in Connecticut.

Leo goes out on the town

AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to FacebookFacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitterTwitterShare to PinterestPinterestPinterestShare to MoreAddThisMore

I am absolutely one of those pet dog mommies that bring their dog
everywhere. I understand I’ve pointed out before exactly how bit time Leo spends at home
alone since he’s at work with me during the day. Well, he likewise identifies along
with us nearly anywhere we go all the time. Leo is always ready to jump in
the cars and truck since he understands we’re going somewhere fun, whether it’s the pet dog park,
work, the beach, a restaurant, or even just a new location to walk around.

Lucky for us, Florida is a extremely dog-friendly state, so we’re
always bringing Leo with us to dinner or fests. considering that he was a puppy we were
bringing him with us to restaurants, partly since we wished to however likewise to
make sure he was well-socialized. It was difficult at very first since Leo wouldn’t sit
still (understandable for a puppy), as well as he would pull at the leash to try and
get to whatever was distracting him. We started providing him chew toys while we
sat down so he would be occupied. Now, he normally sits or lies down and
somewhat patiently awaits his attention. often he’ll try as well as pull away if
there’s one more pet dog nearby, however for the most part, Leo is the very best boy, as well as I love
to have him around.

One of the reasons Leo likes going out to restaurants is because
of all the interest he gets (surprise, surprise). So lots of people, including
waiters as well as waitresses, other restaurant patrons, as well as people walking by, will
stop to state hi as well as pet Leo. He most likely gets so lots of visitors since he will
stare people down as well as wag his tail as an invitation so he can get all the pets.
He likewise likes it since a great deal of locations have a “doggy” menu, as well as I can’t pass
that up so he often gets a doggy biscuit or slice of bacon for being a good
boy.
